NATIONAL HIGHWAY RUNOFF WATER-QUALITY DATA AND METHODOLOGY SYNTHESIS

FHWA  SPONSORED RESEARCH RESULTS

A series of environmental laws, executive orders, and policies addressing the potential threat of highway runoff to the Nation's water resources heightens the Federal and State transportation agencies' environmental responsibilities for policies and programs. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is involved in determining the impact of the highway, highway operations and maintenance practices on the quality of storm-water runoff. The FHWA has also developed methods, evaluated equipment, and provided training materials addressing highway runoff issues. The FHWA has a national role to provide: direct administration of research and technology transfer studies; evaluations; policies; planning activities; and designs. The FHWA also has the mission to work with, coordinate, and assist State highway agencies in these same types of environmental activities.

In this role the FHWA has produced, or sponsored the following reports from sustained efforts spanning more than 20 years. A bibliography of these reports and linked abstracts are attached.
