Conte Anadromous Fish Laboratory

Housatonic River Drainage Basin

The Housatonic River basin has a drainage area of about 1,950 mi2, about a third of which is in Massachusetts.

The river begins in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts and flows about 159 mi southward and southeastward before emptying into Long Island Sound at Stratford, Conn. Major tributaries are the Naugatuck and Shepaug Rivers in Connecticut.
