Monitoring Saltwater Intrusion with Robowell at Provincetown Massachusetts:

Example Purge: Provisional Data

Graph showing an example purge record

This graph, showing an example purge record, shows how the Robowell unit measures water-quality properties until geochemical equilibrium is achieved in the monitoring well.  This example purge is from the deep (TSW-259) monitoring well. The median of the last five readings is recorded as the representative value for the sampling event.  Purging the well ensures that the Robowell data reflects the water quality in the surrounding aquifer rather than potentially stale borehole fluid.  Experimentation has indicated that readings from passive probes may not represent water quality in the surrounding aquifer (Smith and Granato, 1998).  Also, Robowell follows the same protocols used for traditional manual sample collection efforts, therefore, this data is comparable to EPA and USGS approved ground-water sampling techniques.
