The Recharge Report -The Groundwater Foundation - Volume Two - Number Two - February 2001 Saltwater
Seep Being Monitored The amount of saltwater seeping into the groundwater in the lower Cape Cod aquifer system is being monitored by an automated, real-time sampling machine.. A project spokesman says, "Groundwater resources along the Atlantic coastal zone of the United States are vulnerable to saltwater intrusion, which is the movement of saline water into freshwater aquifers. Saltwater intrusion is most commonly caused by groundwater pumping near the coast, and the resulting high salinity can make groundwater unfit for public consumption.
