Overview

In January 2002, the U.S. Geological Survey began continuous water-level monitoring in three wells in the vicinity of the Southeast Ranges of Camp Edwards, near the Impact Area on the Massachusetts Military Reservation, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The purpose of this effort was to examine how water levels at sites with different unsaturated-zone thicknesses near the top of the water-table mound beneath western Cape Cod are affected by temporally- variable recharge from precipitation, which is the sole source of water to the sand and gravel aquifer. The depths to water at the well sites are about 18, 30, and 101 feet below land surface. In January 2005, a well was installed to continuously record water levels at the top of the water-table mound. Site MA-SDW 537 transmits water-level data to USGS websites via satelite every fifteen minutes. Recent work includes the development of recharge estimates from measured climatic data used as a comparison to field measurements.

USGS hydrologic technicians
USGS technicians installed water-level recording and telemetry instrumentation in monitoring well MA-SDW 537-107 located near the top of the water-table mound on Camp Edwards, western Cape Cod, MA. The water-level readings are transmitted by satellite to USGS computers and are updated on the web every 15 minute.
