The USGS has developed and used groundwater flow models on western Cape Cod to provide a regional perspective of the groundwater-flow system in the vicinity of the Massachusetts Military Reservation. These investigations focused primarily on the determination of the hydrogeologic controls on groundwater flow and contaminant transport and the sources of water to pumping wells, ponds, streams, and coastal areas. These investigations began in 1992 and continued through 2000. The initial regional modeling investigation was funded by the National Guard Bureau, with the subsequent modeling studies funded through the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment. Previous USGS investigations throughout Cape Cod, which date back to the early 1970's, were the basis for the current USGS modeling effort on western Cape Cod.
